TBH, my “favorite” New Who companion is Donna, but I think Martha is the one I would call the “best” companion.  In a lot of ways she reminds me Sarah Jane: both were smart, independent, driven women before they met the Doctor, and both turned their heartbreak over him into becoming fierce planetary defenders in their own right.
